She just had to make him understand she wasn’t going anywhere.

David woke up to the sound of someone breathing heavily over him. He listened for a few more minutes before his hand twitched. “McKready, is that you?”

“How did you know? I tried to stay quiet until you stirred.”

David chuckled. “You were breathing over top of me. You didn’t know that you make a grunting sound when you are concentrating, did you?” Every time McKready was sending a telegram he’d do the same thing, make the same type of noises.

McKready drew in a deep breath. “I don’t do that!”

“You do, it’s not noticeable to many others. Just to me. All my other senses are extremely accurate. I can tell if Hope is coming in the room or if it’s the old woman, Mabel. Even the doc’s footsteps are distinct. What do you want, McKready?”

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you have an issue to take care of.”

David shrugged. He didn’t much care to take care of anything right now. The darkness made him feel as if there was nothing important enough to live for. He wasn’t a person to give up too easily, but knowing he may have to live in this darkness the rest of his life was enough to make him feel worthless. “There’s not much I can do as a blind man.”

“Who says you’re blind? Give yourself some time to heal, sheriff? You know what the doc said.”

“Doctors don’t know everything. The doc didn’t see what I did, or rather, didn’t see!” Bitterness spewed from his mouth. He tried hard to shake the resentment, but it hung over him like a dark cloud waiting to burst open and shower a horrendous storm below.

“You can be angry all you want, but if you don’t respond to this telegram, you’ll have a mail order bride on your doorstep in a few days.”

“How so? I thought that was over and done with?” David turned his head, listening to the light footsteps outside his door. Hope was listening in. Even though he was upset, knowing she cared enough to listen to the conversation almost made him grin.

He shook himself. David had to stop caring about what she thought or how she felt. There was no hope for the two of them. Not as long as he was a blind man.

McKready was too quiet. “McKready?”

“Sorry, sheriff. I was shaking my head. Forgot you can’t see! Oh, for Pete’s sake, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to say that!”

“It’s not like it isn’t true. I’m a blind man, McKready. You may as well let everyone know.”

“I’ll do no such thing. Why, when Doc Roberts comes back today and hears you’ve been talking like that, you’re lucky he don’t keep you in bandages for another week after what you did last night.”

“How do you know what I did? Were you talking to Hope?”

“I had a cup of coffee with her and she told me how badly you behaved. Shame on you, sheriff. You are supposed to be an inspiration to all those who are put in your path.
